Orlando Pirates missed the chance to go top of the Absa Premiership with a goalless draw at home to Golden Arrows
Pirates made one change from their victory over Baroka FC, handing a debut to Brazilian Marcelo Da Silva in central defence.
Arrows sat back and allowed possession to the hosts in the earlier minutes. There was a chance to go ahead after pouncing on possession turnover, but Danny Phiri narrowly missed on 13 minutes.
Despite their obvious quality, Bucs struggled to get in the necessary penetrative passes with their experts in this field being anonymous Xola Mlambo, Ben Motshwari and Thembinkosi Lorch.
It was proving to be a game of little chances with halftime approaching, with Arrows content to sit back and frustrate the Sea Robbers.
Mainly, the hosts were reduced to shots from range such as Thabo Matlaba picking up a ball from the right to fire over the top of Nkosingiphile Gumede’s goal.
Abafana Besthende though happened to find the more openings in Bucs defence. Although it was nothing worth troubling, Siboniso Conco and Sibusiso Sibeko managed to get shots away.
With halftime a minute away, Nduduzo Sibiya lined-up for a free-kick on the edge of the box but shot straight at Siyabonga Mpontshane to end off the first period.
Both sides returned unchanged for the second half, and Bucs made the earlier threats with Lorch missing from close range after a low cross.
Arrows continued with their counterattacking approach and nearly caught Bucs on a few occasions in the opening minutes.
Mpontshane had work to do for the first time on 55 minutes, blocking Conco from heading into the net off a flick on.
The Lamontville smelled victory and introduced Lerato Lamola for Sibeko as the first change of the game.
Pirates first change happened shortly thereafter, with Justin Shonga taking the spot of Lorch. Bucs though still failed to impact the game, with their cutting edge approach nowhere in sight.
Given the few half chances, the encounter ended goalless with Arrows achieving their prime objective.
