Absa Premiership match report Cape Town City v Bidvest Wits 02 October 2018

Posted: 2 October 2018 Time: 17:32

Bidvest Wits moved top of the Absa Premiership after defeating MTN8 champions Cape Town City 2-0 at the Cape Town Stadium.

Scottish striker Simon Murray grabbed the lead for the Clever Boys in the eighth minute from the penalty spot after City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh was adjudged to have fouled him inside the box.

Riyaad Norodien tried to pick up the tempo for Benni McCarthy’s troops after 25 minutes but he was often crowded upfront.

Matthew Rusike had an opportunity to bring parity for the hosts five minutes before the break with a header at the back post, but Wits shot-stopper Darren Keet pulled off a good save.

Murray completed his brace in the first-half stoppage time with a close range finish after being left unmarked inside the box, 0-2.

McCarthy’s troops started the second stanza strongly in attack but the visitors were not giving anything away at the back.

Norodien and Craig Martin were excellent for City going forward on the wings after the hour-mark but the likes of Thulani Hlatshwayo were uncompromising at the back.

The Citizens were starting to get frustrated with 20 minutes remaining as they could not unlock the Clever Boys defence.

City tried to refresh the team with substitutions as the half went on, but they were not really clicking and were unable to find to a goal as the Clever Boys held on for three points and a clean sheet.
