Kaizer Chiefs continued their upward surge after recording a 2-0 victory over AmaZulu in an Absa Premiership battle.
Chiefs missed the chance to take an early lead when Bernard Parker fired wide from inside the box of a cross by Godfrey Walusimbi.
AmaZulu were not sitting back and went forward with pace on a few occasions. A run out wide from Butholezwe Ncube saw him being tripped after getting goal-side but no penalty was awarded.
A corner from Chiefs found the head of Daniel Cardoso, but the latter failed to mark his return to the starting eleven with a goal to boot.
The home side were finding spaces behind the Usuthu defence with Lebogang Manyama the main man aiming to torment them.
His cross from the right on 17 minutes picked out Parker who stood unmarked inside the box, but the veteran headed well over the top.
AmaZulu launched another attack, led by Bonginkosi Ntuli but his efforts failed to connect with Siyethemba Sithebe on 27 minutes.
Manyama’s free-kick from outside the box forced Moeneeb Josephs to tip for a corner. From the corner, a bobble around the box saw Cardoso crack the woodwork from close range.
In vein, the Amakhosi appealed for a goal after protesting Josephs carried the ball over the line from Manyama’s free-kick but the TV replays showed otherwise.
The deadlocked was finally broken as Mphahlele smothered home Manyama’s corner following poor defending from the visitors just before halftime.
Both sides returned unchanged for the second stanza, with Usuthu needing something special for the comeback.
The dominance by the Glamour Boys would be further ratified despite the little pressure from their counterparts.
A brilliant free-kick whipped in on the right by Khama Billiat found the head of Siyabonga Ngezana who made no mistake with a pin-point header in the bottom corner.
This forced the KZN side to make changes and in came two out-and-out forwards in Mabhuti Khenyeza and Emiliano Tade.
Although, the Amakhosi were unfazed and continued piling on the pressure amidst the change in formation from the KZN outfit.
After beating the offside trap – Dumisani Zuma picked out Billiat inside the box but the Zimbabwean miscued right in front of goal.
Giovanni Solinas made his first change in the closing minutes after Dumisani Zuma made way for Hendrick Pule Ekstein.
Two minutes from added time, Tade managed to crack a low shot from the edge of the box after poor defending but Itumeleng Khune saved easily, as Chiefs ran out easy victors.
