Absa Premiership match report Orlando Pirates v SuperSport United 15 September 2018

Posted: 15 September 2018 Time: 18:21

Orlando Pirates ended their hoodoo over SuperSport United with a 3-1 victory at Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.

Pirates tried to close the gap on the pace-setters, and gradually grew in the game after a slow start which produced a lack of clear-cut chances.

In the opening 10 minutes, both sides sussed each other out and got a feel of the contest instead with limited chances on goal.

With the game’s first chance, Pule made it two from two with a diving header at the far post off a cross from the left.

Bucs were pinned back slightly, but managed to dust themselves off to continue controlling the game to its fullest.

The Soweto giants left an unmarked Bradley Grobler inside the box for a free-kick, fortunately the effort was dealt with by Siyabonga Mpontshane.

SuperSport made an early change on 27 minutes, as Thuso Phala made way for Fagrie Lakay in a tactical switch.

Mpontshane made another plug out from the air, with another header off the head of Grobler closer to halftime.

The questions from Bucs didn’t end, after beating the offside trap Pule set up Linda Mntambo on the edge of the box, only for the latter to skew way off target.

It was beginning to be the Grobler show at the other end, as he tried to chip an advancing Mpontshane on 40 minutes.

Pirates found a few chances at the start of the second half, but Pule in particular flicked his glancing header wide.

With a slow quarter to get the half underway, the Tshwane outfit found it tough to unclog any meaningful chances.

Bucs made their first change, as Diamond Thopola replaced Paseka Mako. The change came at the wrong time, as SuperSport drew level after Bongani Khumalo volleyed home at the back post.

The goal set the hosts back, with United creating the better chances as James Keene was denied from close-range by Mpontshane.

Eight minutes from time, Thembinkosi Lorch came off the bench to lash home the second goal underneath the clutches of Ronwen Williams.

The Buccaneers managed to breakthrough again on the far side, but Justin Shonga shot straight at Williams.

Former Bidvest Wits midfielder Ben Motshwari got his account up and running, poking home the third after good work from Shonga.

Shonga managed to breakthrough again and went one-on-one with Williams who punched away for a corner, as Bucs end the SuperSport hoodoo.
