Mamelodi Sundowns cruised to a 2-0 win over Polokwane City in their Absa Premiership match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Rodney Ramagalela and Vusimuzi Mngomezulu had a chance to open the scoring for Rise and Shine in the tenth minute and 11th minute after going through, but both were unable to find the target in quick succession.
Ricardo Nascimento grabbed the lead for the Brazilians in the 17th minute with a beautiful gliding header at the near post following a corner, 0-1.
Masandawana were beginning to settle into their passing rhythm after 25 minutes where Lebohang Maboe nearly doubled the lead after combining with Thapelo Morena inside the box but his effort cleared.
Pitso Mosimane’s charges were still bossing the game after 35 minutes, while City unable to keep up with their pace.
The pace of the match fizzled out in the closing minutes of the half due to a couple of stoppages owing to injuries - Masandawana goalkeeper Denis Onyango was stretched off the pitch and into an ambulance and was replaced by Kennedy Mweene as the Brazilians took the 1-0 lead into the break.
Lebohang Maboe doubled the lead for Mosimane’s men seven minutes after the break with a powerful header inside the edge of the box following a long cross into the area, 0-2.
Maboe almost got his double and a third for the Brazilians four minutes before the hour after going clear, but he could not beat on-rushing City goalkeeper George Chigova, who made a good save.
Rise and Shine upped their tempo with 20 minutes to go, but they lacked the firepower in the last third.
The hosts ultimately could not get any momentum going with five minutes to play and never really troubled Sundowns shot-stopper Mweene apart from the Jabulani Maluleke free-kick from just outside the box that sailed slightly wide.
The Brazilians had chances to increase their tally in the closing minutes, but 2-0 was enough then to clinch all the three points.
