2018 World Cup Quarter-Final match report Uruguay v France 06 July 2018

Posted: 6 July 2018 Time: 17:31

France progressed to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup with a 2-0 win over Uruguay in Nizhny Novgorod on Friday evening.

France started on the backfoot as Hugo Lloris was forced off his line to punch clear off Cristhian Stuani's header.

Uruguay were then asked questions after a ball played in the box found Olivier Giroud, who headed into the path of Kylian Mbappe, with the end result hitting the top of the net.

As previous World Cup meetings in 2002 and 2010 ended goalless, it appeared to heading that way again.

However, Les Bleus' first strike on target brought gold as Raphael Varane ran in ahead of the defence to steer his header into the bottom corner off an Antoine Griezmann free-kick.

Martin Caceres looked to respond for the South Americans and had Lloris at full stretch with his header following a free-kick, with Diego Godin unable to bury the rebound.

Trailing by a goal, La Celeste brought in Maximiliano Gomez and Cristian Rodriguez in a bid to turn things around.

However, any resurgence was abandoned after Griezmann's speculative shot slipped through Fernando Muslera's grasp before bouncing into the back of the net.

In the end, the French quest to reclaim the crown lost in 1998 lives on with a semi-final date pencilled in for Tuesday, where they will face the winner of the tie between Brazil and Belgium..

Furthermore, it’s done with their first victory over Uruguay in the World Cup finals after losing the initial one in 1966.
