Peru registered their first World Cup goals in 36 years as they earned a 2-0 victory over Australia in Tuesday's final round of Group C matches.

After a quiet start to the clash, Andre Carrillo opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a superb volleyed strike at the back post, 0-1.

The opening goal seemed to have a good effect on the South Americans, who were comfortable on the ball and were threatening to double their lead on set plays.

The Socceroos, meanwhile, did show some attacking intent as they approached half-an-hour, but Tom Rogic and Matthew Leckie squandered chances after 30 minutes.

Ricardo Gareca’s charges were quite comfortable going into the break as a result, while the Socceroos needed to up their game if they had any chances of progressing to the last 16.

Paolo Guerrero doubled the lead for the South Americans five minutes into the second stanza with a neat left-footed finish inside the box.

The frustration was beginning to show for the Aussies towards the hour mark as they were forcing their way into Peru’s box but chances were hard to come by.

The Socceroos were still probing with 20 minutes to go, while Peru were fancied their chances on the break although they were let down by their decision-making.

Bert van Marwijk’s men were struggling to combine going forward in the final stages of the second half as Peru ran out 2-0 winners.
