Spain advanced to the knockout stages of the 2018 World Cup despite a 2-2 draw with Morocco in their last Group B match on Monday night.
Spain dominated possession in the early stages and they played at a high tempo, but had not yet created clear opportunities.
However, Sergio Ramos committed a horrible error as the last man of defence after being dispossessed by Khalid Boutaïb, who raced clear to give Morocco a shock lead on 14 minutes.
La Roja responded five minutes later as Isco made it 1-1 with a close-range finish following a slaloming run from Andres Iniesta.
La Roja were vulnerable to counter-attacks whenever they pushed forward and they were nearly punished by Boutaïb again in the 25th minute but goalkeeper David de Gea made a crucial save.
Iniesta created another chance in first-half stoppage time, cutting through the Morocco defence but Diego Costa could not finish at close range.
Nordin Amrabat was unlucky not to have sent Herve Renard’s men ahead in the 56th minute with a rocket of a strike that hit the corner of the crossbar from just outside the box.
Isco came close to grabbing the lead for La Roja two minutes after the hour with a free header inside the box but Romain Saïss cleared the ball on the line.
With 10 minutes remaining, Youssef En-Nesyri netted for Morocco as he rose highest inside the box to power through a header from a corner, 1-2
However, Iago Aspas managed to rescue a draw for Spain with a clever flick home at the near post in second-half stoppage time to make it 2-2 following consultations with the VAR.
