2018 World Cup Group A match report Saudi Arabia v Egypt 25 June 2018

Posted: 25 June 2018 Time: 17:03

Egypt ended their World Cup campaign without a point as they crashed to a 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia at the Volgograd Arena on Monday evening.

Juan Antonio Pizzi's men found the early rhythm as Hussain Al Moghawi was presented a few yards of open space and decided to test Essam El Hadary, but the effort was skewed wide.

The Saudis continued keeping the Egyptians back as Salem Al Dawsari ventured forward with a storming run but lacked the desired effect with a poor finish.

Egypt, though, went ahead with their first effort on goal as Mohamed Salah edged ahead of the defence to control brilliantly before lobbing goalkeeper Yasser Al Mosailem following a pinpoint pass by Abdallah El Said.

On two occasions, Trezeguet threatened to get on the score-sheet for Egypt but back-to-back curlers weren't able to cause any harm after the half-hour mark.

The Green Falcons were handed a penalty soon after as Ahmed Fathi was deemed to have handled inside the 18-yard area.

However, Fahad Al-Muwallad was unable to beat El Hadary, who pushed the effort onto the top of the woodwork to keep the Pharaohs ahead.

The Middle East nation were handed another chance from the spot after a foul by Ali Gaber, and this time they made no mistake as Salman Al faraj converted with ease on the stroke of halftime.

Egypt then found a perfect opportunity to regain the advantage shortly after the break, but Trezeguet was unable to hit the target after connecting with a cross out wide but heading astray.

Hussain rose highest ahead of the opposing defender to meet an incoming delivery from the right, but El Hadary tipped it away for a corner at the midway stage of the second half.

The resultant corner found El Hadary at the heart of it again as he denied Hattan Bahebri who jumped highest to pluck out a header.

However, the Saudis snatched victory at the death thanks to a Salem Al Dawsari's close range finish to end their campaign on a high and send Egypt home empty-handed.
