Nedbank Cup semi-final match report Maritzburg United v Mamelodi Sundowns 22 April 2018

Posted: 22 April 2018 Time: 13:24

Maritzburg United rallied from behind to beat 10-man Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1 on Sunday for a spot in the Nedbank Cup final.

Downs wasted no time getting in front, with Gaston Sirino getting his first goal for the club as his shot after 70 seconds was fumbled by United goalkeeper Richard Ofori before rolling across the line.

Maritzburg had to wait until the 11th minute to get their first shot on goal, but it was rather wasted as Andrea Fileccia fired over the top.

Sundowns, who have conceded only six goals since their January defeat to Orlando Pirates, were struggling to get a firm grip on proceedings.

The Team of Choice then won a free-kick on the edge of the area but captain Bevan Fransman but was unable to find the target on 25 minutes.

They continued probing for the equaliser and Fileccia looked to charge down on Onyango, but the keeper was off his line in a flash to smother the danger.

Themba Zwane’s defence-splitting pass to find Sibusiso Vilakazi nearly made them pay, but Ofori managed to save from close range on 41 minutes.

It was soon level-pegging as Lebohang Maboe got on the edge of the box and beautifully blasted past Onyango after 43 minutes.

Sundowns got on the attack straight away in the second-half and Tau came close but his flash shot went wide.

Minutes later, Zwane tried to barge through the defence after picking up a ball in the middle but Ofori was able to save at the near post.

Sibusiso Vilakazi, who shone in the last two games, cracked the crossbar following an enterprising cross on the touchline in the 64th minute.

On 70 minutes, Sirino looked to complete his brace with a top-corner finish but Ofori stretched well to deny him.

The Uruguayan’s game ended soon after as he picked up a second yellow card following an off the ball incident to head down the tunnel for an early shower.

They were pegged back with five minutes to go after Mxolisi Kunene showed great composure inside the box to fire low from eight yards out with a sliding finish.

Fortune Makaringe made sure of their first-ever cup final with the third a minute before added time, beating Onyango with an easy finish.
