Real Madrid secured a resounding 3-0 victory over Juventus in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final, with Cristiano Ronaldo playing a starring role.
With last season’s final in Cardiff still fresh in the memory, Juve were looking for some sort of revenge for that damming defeat to the Galacticos in June last year.
But they were dealt a blow as early as the third minute with the opener from Ronaldo with a low finish with the outside of his boot from a cross by Isco.
The Italians looked for the equaliser and almost found one through Gonzalo Higuain, but an excellent reflex save from Keylor Navas denied the striker after 22 minutes.
The European Cup holders pushed forward for the second goal, and it almost came through when Toni Kroos hit the top of the crossbar on 36 minutes.
A few penalty appeals from the home side involving Higuain and Paulo Dybala were waved away by the match officials.
Ronaldo, who has scored 13 goals in this season’s Champions League campaign, came close to his second of the evening with a shot from an acute angle, but was unable to find the target.
His second finally came following good work from substitute Lucas Vazquez who replaced Karim Benzema saw his initial shot blocked by Gianluigi Buffon.
It forced the ball out wide which Isco got a hold off to fire in a cross to which Ronaldo connected for an audacious bicycle finish on 64 minutes.
Juve, last year’s runners-up, were dealt a severe blow after their key men Dybala saw red for a second bookable offence a minute later.
The hosts were put out of their misery with Marcelo rounding off the result with an easy finish following poor defending by Massimiliano Allegri’s charges.
