Telkom Knockout match report Maritzburg United v Platinum Stars 27 October 2017
Posted: 27 October 2017
Platinum Stars advanced to the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout after defeating Maritzburg United 3-1 on penalties on Friday evening.
The match was decided by a penalty shoot-out, after Dikwena and Maritzburg failed to find the back of the net after 120 minutes of football.
Dikwena looked lively in the opening stages of the first half and they went close after nine minutes when Katlego Otladisa's bicycle kick sailed just wide of the upright.
Maritzburg, on the other hand, found it tough to get going in the early stages and only looked lively a couple counter attacks.
The hosts did go close on 30 minutes as Devon Saal picked up the ball just outside the box and fired a deflected effort, which sailed just wide of the upright.
10 minutes later, Maritzburg carved a golden chance as Saal delightfully played in Evans Rusike, who blazed wide of the target with only Dino Visser to beat.
Nevertheless, the score remained goalless as the sides entered the halftime break.
After a slow start to the half, Dikwena coach Roger de Sa introduced Robert Ng'ambi for Thabang Sesinyi after 53 minutes.
The second half continued in the same fashion as the first, as both sides found it tough to create clear-cut chances.
With both clubs struggling in the final third, strikes from distance were the only option as Stars' Ng'ambi fired just wide of the mark after 65 minutes.
De Sa threw on Ryan De Jongh and Bongi Ntuli for the final 15 minutes as Dikwena pushed for a winning goal in the closing stages.
Neither side could fashion a chance in the final miutes of the second half, which forced the game into extra time.
However, extra-time could not produce a winning goal with both sides lacking the killer instinct in the final third.
The match went to penalties, where Stars goalkeeper Visser was the hero, saving two penalties as Dikwena triumphed 3-1 in the shoot-out.
