A second half penalty by Noah Chivuta handed BidVest Wits a valuable 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs in a Castle Premiership encounter at Olympia Stadium on Friday night.
The Amakhosi dominated for most of the match, but failed to find a way past the Students’ goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs, who was in good form.
Chiefs attacked their opponents’ goal from the offset and almost went ahead in the 14th minute when striker Shaun Bartlett saw his shot come back off the post.
Former Amakhosi striker David Radebe threatened to score against his old team when he sent a long range shot narrowly wide in the 29th minute.
Chiefs’ keeper Itumeleng Khune was called into action three minutes later when he was forced to save a good long range effort by BidVest Wits’ Phil Evans.
The hosts threatened two minutes later when Jonathan Quartey saw his long range effort saved by Josephs and the visitors’ keeper was called into action again in the 38th minute when he had to save a long range shot by Chiefs midfielder Tinashe Nengomasha.
Chiefs’ striker Mabhuti Khanyeza also had two efforts on goal saved by an inspired Josephs in the 40th and 41st minutes.
The match remained goalless at the break.
Chiefs created the first real chance of the second half, but Siphiwe Tshabalala’s right-footed shot was blocked by Ashraf Hendricks in the 59th minute.
The Students took the lead in the 63rd minute when they were awarded a penalty after Ditheko Mototo handled the ball inside the area and Chivuta made no mistake from the spot.
Chiefs went close in the 75th minute when Tshabalala sent in a good cross from the left, but Bartlett’s powerful header was saved by Josephs.
That was the final chance of the game as both sides rang the changes, with Chiefs pushing more men forward in search of an equaliser, while BidVest Wits adopted a more defensive approach to protect their lead, which they did successfully.
The starting line-ups were as follows:
Kaizer Chiefs: Khune, Nzama, Mototo, Tsotetsi, Bhasera, Quartey, Nengomasha, Mooki, Mathebula, Bartlett, Khanyeza
BidVest Wits: Josephs, Evans, A. Hendricks, Lobo, B. Hendricks, Bienvenu, Sosibo, Chivuta, Winstanley, Radebe, Studzinski
