Bloemfontein Celtic's hopes of a victory were dashed when a late equaliser by AmaZulu forced a 1-1 draw.
Usuthu were not overawed in the City of Roses and took the game to the hosts in the opening exchanges.
Celtic were content to sit back and absorb the earlier onslaught, but whenever they had an inviting opportunity to press forward, they failed to utilise it to good effect.
The closest they came to the opener saw winger Deon Hotto finding space at the back post, but headed tamely at Siyabonga Mbatha on 31 minutes.
With half-time approaching, Kabelo Dlamini got on the right side and connected with a cross-cum-shot which he blasted horribly wide of the target.
Both sides remained unchanged at the start of the second half, with Usuthu starting the way they did the first spell.
Butholezwe Ncube produced an extraordinary save off Patrick Tignyemb after trying to find the top corner off a free-kick after 51 minutes.
Siwelele combined with their short-passing movements on the edge of the box and on one occasion forced Mbatha off his line with an acrobatic tip for a corner.
Celtic made their first change as Veselin Jelusic brought on Tshegofatso Mabasa for Dlamini in the 60th minute.
The Daveyton-born player was immediately into action as he almost broke the deadlock with his first touch, but was unable to control properly.
At the opposite end, Tignyemb made his presence felt once again with another goal-written save off a shot by Thembela Sikhakhane.
The hosts went in front nine minutes from time following a stunning daisy-cutter from Jacky Motshegwa that first hit the inside post before the net.
But their hopes of victory were dashed when they were pegged back by a Mhlengi Cele strike from an acute angle for the equaliser and a share of the spoils.
