Mamelodi Sundowns maintained top spot in the Absa Premiership after beating Chippa United 2-0 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
The match started at a high tempo, with the Chilli Boys not sitting back against big spenders Sundowns.
Pitso Mosimane’s charges were struggling to play their normal passing game after the first quarter of the half as United were pressing them high.
Linda Mntambo should have opened the scoring for Vladislav Heric’s men in the 18th minute after going through on goal with the Brazilians goalkeeper Denis Onyango inside the box, but the Ugandan made a crucial save.
Mntambo had another chance to punish the hosts on the half-hour mark following an error at the back but Onyango saved Mosimane’s men the blushes once again.
Percy Tau broke the deadlock for the Tshwane side eight minutes before the break with a close-range finish inside the box following some hesitant defending by United.
Sibusiso Vilakazi was unlucky not to have found the second goal for Masandawana 10 minutes into the second half after his strike was brilliantly kept out by United goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi at close range.
Khama Billiat had a chance to make it 2-0 to the home side in the 67th minute with a free-kick from just outside the box curling his strike into the bottom corner but goalkeeper Akpeyi made a good save.
Mosimane’s troops slowed down the tempo of the match with 15 minutes remaining, frustrating the Chilli Boys who were in a rush to go forward.
However, Billiat did find the second goal for the hosts 10 minutes before time with a chip over goalkeeper Akpeyi after going clear in the middle of the defence following another mistake at the back, 2-0.
That was a killer blow for United and they could not get back into the match as the Brazilians stayed compact to close the match out.
