Absa Premiership match report Bidvest Wits v Maritzburg United 03 April 2018

Posted: 3 April 2018 Time: 17:34

Bidvest Wits kept their top-eight ambitions alive as they scored in either half for a 2-1 win over high-flying Maritzburg United.

Wits have struggled with form in recent weeks, which culminated in their CAF Champions League exit at the hands of Petro Luanda prior to the international break.

They were looking to put the brakes on Maritzburg’s astounding campaign, with the Team of Choice through to the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, and went about their business from the get go.

Full-back Reeve Frosler pumped in a cross early on with the United defence outstretched, but Richard Ofori was able to parry safely.

The deadlock was finally broken after Keagan Ritchie whipped in a free-kick from the edge of the box that gave Ofori no chance on 16 minutes.

Ofori made himslef big once again when he denied James Keene metres from goal, but the Englishman was unable to double their tally.

Wits made a strong start to the second half, eager to avoid the possibility of it slipping away from them.

With players like Pelembe, Keene and Lehlohonolo Majoro, the champions were threatening every time they got on the ball.

The resilience Gavin Hunt has instilled in the side since taking over reared its head once more when Buhle Mkhwanazi headed home the second from a corner six minutes to the end.

The win moves them firmly into the top eight, leapfrogging Bloemfontein Celtic in eight place in the process.
