Absa Premiership match report AmaZulu v Golden Arrows 03 February 2018

Posted: 3 February 2018 Time: 12:41

AmaZulu came from a goal down to claim a 2-1 win over Golden Arrows in the much-talked about KZN derby on Saturday evening.

The battle for a top eight spot was up for grabs, with both sides struggling for a consistent run of form this season.

Usuthu made the promising start and pushed the visitors on the back foot, but couldn’t make use of their half-chances.

Abafana Besthende soon found their footing and created the game’s first chance with a free-kick from Knox Mutizwa that forced Siyabonga Mbatha to parry it into touch.

They went close again through Danny Venter, who cut inside from the left but shot wide of goal after 13 minutes.

Arrows reasserted their foothold and called Nkosingiphile Gumede to action to tip Tapelo Nyongo’s free-kick away for a corner kick moments later.

The pendulum went both ends, but Arrows threatened once again this time with the help of Kudakwashe Mahachi who produced a stunning save from Mbatha.

Seven minutes from the restart, Clinton Larsen’s charges took the lead through Mutizwa who raised through on goal to beat Mbatha.

The lead last only seven minutes as Siyathemba Mnguni sneaked ahead of the defence to toe-poke home the equalizer.

Mnguni got his brace later on, with a stunning left-footed drive from the edge of the box that gave Gumede no chance.

A shell-shocked Arrows searched for the equalizer, but the momentum was on the side of Cavin Johnson’s team.

It got worse for them as they were reduced to 10-men after Danny Venter was given a straight red card for a dangerous tackle.

Nine minutes from time, Usuthu also found themselves with a man short with Michael Morton shown a straight red for dangerous play.

In the end, they held on for the maximum points that elevates them into the top eight for only the second time this season.
