Absa Premiership match report Platinum Stars v Orlando Pirates 27 January 2018

Posted: 27 January 2018 Time: 12:07

Orlando Pirates heaped more misery on Platinum Stars with a 2-0 victory at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

After a slow start, Bucs grew into the game as the half went by and took full control despite the fact that they were given an early scare by Bonginkosi Ntuli who forced Jackson Mabokgwane into a point-blank save in the opening three minutes.

They dusted themselves off after that and went about business the way everybody knows how, with countless attacks at Dino Visser’s goal.

Good work by Luvuyo Memela and Justin Shonga set-up Thembinkosi Lorch, who instead of a first time shot delayed and allowed Visser enough time to thwart him from breaking the deadlock.

Memela took matters in his own hands by creating space for himself on the edge of the box, only to fire over the bar.

Bucs finally went ahead with Shonga opening his account for the club with a well-executed header from Innocent Maela’s inch-perfect cross after 28 minutes.

Musa Nyatama was looking for a two-goal cushion minutes before the break, but his attempt was deflected onto the side-netting.

Bucs started slowly and were unfortunate not to go behind in the third minute after Bonginkosi Ntuli turned Ntsikelelo Nyauza and forced Jackson Mabokgwane into a stunning close range save.

They response came when Luvuyo Memela and Justin Shonga set-up Thembinkosi Lorch who delayed his attempt at goal, thus allowing Dino Visser to deny him from point-blank range.

Memela then tried to open proceedings after creating space for himself on the edge of the box, but went way over the top.

Musa Nyatama got on the end of a loose ball on the edge of the box and fired in a first time shot which was blocked on its way to goal by teammate Shonga who tried to follow up the loose ball but to no avail.

The Zambian made amends minutes later when he connected with Innocent Maela’s delivery to beat Visser with a glancing header on his near post.

Nyatama came close to goal once again, but he saw his effort deflected onto the side-netting and away for a corner kick minutes before half time.

Riyaad Norodien went close for his first goal in the Bucs colours, with a shot from range that forced Visser to punch it away for a corner kick.

Visser was called into action once again, this time to fist the resultant corner onto the top of the post, with Bucs hell bent on securing a second goal.

Shonga nearly got his brace after running at Dikwena’s defence, but his curling effort could only hit the outside of the goal-posts 10 minutes in the second half.

Defender Gladwin Shitolo hurt himself after trying to block an in-coming cross, and was forcibly replaced by Marshall Munetsi in the 60th minute.

Mabokgwane had to scramble to the ground to punch Zama Rambuwane’s free-kick away for a corner four minutes later.

Lorch showed a clean pair of heels before the 20th minute spell, but fired straight at Visser. He came close again after breaking out wide that forced Visser to tip away his cross-cum shot.

The former Chippa United man finally got on the score-sheet with a well-drilled finish in the bottom corner following Memela’s delivery in the 72nd minute.

Memela was unlucky not to get in on the act after combining well with substitute Thabiso Kutumela, he could only saw his effort sailing across the face of goal 15 minutes from full time.

The result is a perfect birthday present for Bucs chairman Dr Irvin Khoza, as they leapfrog Cape Town City in second place albeit for the time being.
