Orlando Pirates claimed their second successive win of the year with an impressive 3-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns in the Absa Premiership.
They made their intentions clear to avenge last season’s 6-0 thumping through Ntsikelelo Nyauza with the opener from close range in the opening two minutes.
Sibusiso Vilakazi looked to restore immediate parity after being played through by Percy Tau, but his goal-written effort was blocked by Gladwin Shitolo.
Played in unbearable heat in Tshwane, neither side were affected with Themba Zwane coming close to equalizing but found his effort deflected into touch by Jackson Mabokgwane.
Tiyani Mabunda then tried his luck for the leveler, but Mabokgwane once again came to the fore with an acrobatic save.
It was fast becoming a contest between Mabokgwane and the Downs team who forced their former player to stretch his clutches and deny Tau with a pin-point header after 11 minutes.
Motjeka Madisha’s turnover after 18 minutes brought in Justin Shonga who set-up Mpho Makola to beat Denis Onyango with a low shot in the bottom corner.
Luvuyo Memela squandered a glorious one-on-one opportunity on the half and hour mark when he blasted over the bar after being played through by Jackson Mabokgwane.
Downs finally got the better of Mabokgwane with a side-footed finish from Tau following a pass from Zwane in the 38th minute.
Memela almost got on the score-sheet with a shot from outside the box, but it came off the upright minutes before half-time.
Tau looked to have levelled proceedings when he beat Mabokgwane with a low-cum shot, but he was flagged for offside by Zakhele Siwela two minutes from the break.
Milutin Sredojevic freshened up his attacking stall with the introduction of Thembinkosi Lorch for Shonga, and the former was brought in on goal but he could only find the side-netting.
At the other end, Pitso Mosimane looked for inspiration in form of Anthony Laffor and in similar fashion to Memela’s earlier miss, the Liberian went over the top.
Lorch and Memela combined to terrorize the Brazilians, and nearly profited but they met a firm standing Onyango who denied their every attempt.
Memela, who had two shots on goal earlier, made no mistake seven minutes from time with top-drawer finish for his third goal in two matches.
The win is the Soweto giants first over Downs since the 2014/15 season, as they move into third spot on 26 points after 17 matches.
