Polokwane City were the recipients of a five-goal thriller when they served Mamelodi Sundowns a 3-2 defeat in Polokwane on Saturday.
Downs, who came into the game following a 1-0 loss to Cape Town City, gave a first start to a certain Ricardo Nascimento in central defence.
Former Kaizer Chiefs talisman George Lebese got the opportunity to start up front with Percy Tau and Themba Zwane for the first time this season in a 4-3-3 formation.
They wasted no time making their presence felt when Lebese tapped home the opener three minutes into the contest following Hlompho Kekana’s delivery.
They almost doubled their tally 13 minutes later through Oupa Manyisa, who capitalised on poor defending only to be denied by George Chigova.
Four minutes later, the latter was at it again to deny Tau, who squeezed his way past two central defenders before intercepting a loose ball only to see his effort punched into touch.
The Bafana Bafana international was in the thick of things once again when he failed to direct Zwane’s defence-splitting pass into Chigova’s goal in the 27th minute.
The hosts grew late in the game but were unable to get any form of effort on goal as the Brazilians went into the interval a goal ahead.
The visitors were forced into a half time change when Anele Ngcongca fractured his knee and was replaced by Siyanda Zwane, while Anthony Laffor replaced Lebese in attack.
The home side came out stronger, and it was no surprise that they drew level eight minutes later through Sammy Seabi, who headed home Jabulani Maluleke’s free-kick.
They went ahead a minute later when Manyisa failed to control the ball properly to allow Walter Musona to beat Denis Onyango at the near post.
The seven-time champions drew level moments later when Manyisa beat the offside trap to capitalise on Tau’s through ball to score the equaliser.
City would have the last laugh after the league’s top goal-scorer Rodney Ramagalela blasted home into the bottom corner to secure all three points, much to the delight of the home crowd.
