Absa Premiership match report Free State Stars v Orlando Pirates 16 December 2017

Posted: 16 December 2017 Time: 12:57

Free State Stars claimed a second straight Absa Premiership win with a 2-1 victory over Orlando Pirates at Goble Park.

Justin Shonga had an early chance to put the Buccaneers ahead after being sent through on goal but he fluffed his chance with only goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangaret to beat in the second minute.

Siphelele Mthembu nearly opened the scoring for Stars in the 21st minute with a header inside the box but Jackson Mabokgwane was alert to collect at the far post.

Luvuyo Memela almost scored a spectacular goal in the 31st minute after his attempted hook into the area from a free-kick looped to the far post, but the effort sailed narrowly.

Pirates defender Ntsikelelo Nyauza could not continue with the match after 35 minutes following an injury and was replaced by Thabo Rakhale.

Rakhale could have broken the deadlock immediately after coming on with a fierce strike from 20-yards but Sangare parried the powerful shot away to safely.

Goodman Dlamini was denied an opening goal by Mabokgwane just before the halftime break as the sides went into the break goalless.

10 minutes into the second half, Abbubaker Mobara scored into his own net following a great attacking move where Sinethemba Jantjie forced the Buccaneers midfielder into an error that broke the deadlock for Stars, 1-0.

Thabiso Kutumela levelled matters for Milutin Sredojevic's charges five minutes later with a composed finish after being teed up by Justin Shonga.

Thamsanqa Gabuza missed a sitter in the 71st minute after going through one-on-one with Sangare just moments after coming on for Shonga.

The Soweto giants dominated after 80 minutes and created chances but their finishing let down them on numerous occasions.

Jantjie punished the visitors six minutes before time with a close range finish after Jackson Mabokgwane failed to deal with a cross from the right flank, 2-1.

The Buccaneers were desperate in the final minutes, but Stars managed to hold on to claim a second straight win in the league.
