Roland Putsche's second-half strike was enough to hand Cape Town City a 1-0 win over AmaZulu at the Cape Town Stadium.
The Citizens have now moved up to second spot in the Absa Premiership standings with one more game to play this year.
In the seventh minute. Sibusiso Masina was brilliantly put through clear on goal by Victor Obinna but Phumlani Gumede made timely tackle from behind inside the box.
Usuthu tried to slow down the tempo of the match after 20 minutes as the hosts were playing at high tempo.
Siduduzo Dlamini beat the offside trap in the 29th minute to go clear on goal with only goalkeeper Sage Stephens but the Citizens' shot-stopper came out tops.
The match was open with five minutes left on the clock as both sides were cancelled each other out in the middle of the park.
Putsche almost opened the scoring three minutes before halftime with a header inside the box following a free-kick by Aubrey Ngoma.
Obinna also came close with a minute left before the break after being setup by Ebrahim Seedat on the left wing with a superb cross but his side-footed shot at the near post missed wide as the first stanza ended goalless.
Mhlengi Cele almost broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half with a glancing header at the near post but Stephens produced a fine save to deny the forward.
Teko Modise was introduced in the game moments after 64 minutes in place of Obinna, while Cele made way for Rhulani Manzini for the visitors.
Benni McCarthy made another change in the 75th minute, as he brought on Lyle Lakay in place of Ngoma.
Putsche finally broke the deadlock six minutes before time with a simple tap-in from point-blank range after City had struck the woodwork twice just moments earlier.
The hosts did not sit back in the closing minutes and were looking to put the game to bed, but 1-0 was how the score remained at the full-time whistle.
