Evans Rusike netted a brace to inspire Maritzburg United to a 3-0 win over Baroka FC at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
The Team of Choice started the match with higher intensity. Mohau Mokate nearly grabbed an early lead in the third minute but his looping header sailed over the crossbar.
Bakgaga absored pressure and looked to force errors at the back by pressing high with the attacking players.
Lebohang Maboe had an opportunity to open the scoring for the hosts in the 23rd minute after being given space to shoot from the edge of the box, but his strike sailed over the bar.
Evans Rusike opened scoring for Maritzburg in the 30th minute as he turned brilliantly inside the six-yard box and fired an unstoppable strike into the roof of the net, 1-0.
Olaleng Shaku nearly equalised for Kgoloko Thobejane's charges in the 36th minute with a header inside the box but goalkeeper Richard Ofori collected with ease.
The visitors' search for the equaliser before the halftime break came to nothing as United stayed resolute at the back and took their 1-0 lead to the dressing room.
Siphelele Ntshangase almost brought parity for Bakgaga two minutes into the second half with a great strike that ruffled the side netting.
Rusike extended United's lead in the 53rd minute as he found the top corner with a right-footed strike after being gifted a lot of room for movement on the edge of the box, 2-0.
Siphesihle Ndlovu made it 3-0 on 65 minutes with a fine individual run that was capped off with a fine finish into the roof of the net.
Mokate was withdrawn by coach Fadlu Davids in the 71st minute and Andrea Fileccia took his place.
Thobejane's troops lacked ideas going forward and could not create clear-cut chances after 80 minutes although they were applying pressure.
Davids' charges had chances to add more goals in the closing stages, but the three goals proved to be enough.
