Roger de Sa’s Platinum Stars claimed their first point of the season in a 0-0 draw at home to Chippa United on Saturday evening.
Stars had arguably the best chance of the first half in the 23rd minute when Robert Ng'ambi timed his run into the box to perfection, getting on the end of an aerial ball. However, he could not direct his header on target.
Chippa began to string a few good passes together towards the end of the half. Mark Mayambela fired a shot at goal from just inside the box in the 39th minute, but it was well off the mark.
However, it didn’t take long before the former Orlando Pirates man limped off the field with an injury. In the 45th minute, he was replaced by Phetso Maphanga.
Otherwise, the first half was largely uneventful — with Platinum Stars going into the break looking marginally the better of the two sides.
De Sa brought Thobani Kunene on for Abia Nale as the teams came out for the second half, but otherwise, there was not much change in the opening phases as neither side came close to scoring.
In the 54th minute, Teboho Moloi introduced Moeketsi Sekola in place of Andile Mbenyane.
Three minutes later, De Sa gambled by replacing defensive midfielder Mkhabela with the more attack-minded Raymond Monama.
Sixty-six minutes in, Paseka Mako got into a great position to pull the trigger. However, the flag came up for offside and the attack was stopped in its tracks.
Chippa continued to put pressure on De Sa’s defence, but he persisted with his quest for a winner — bringing on Maboke Matlakala for Bongi Ntuli.
Moloi followed suit a minute later, replacing Katlego Mashego with Sizwe Mdlinzo.
In the 90th minute, Kurt Lentjies played a lovely ball into the box from the right, which Mako looked certain to stroke into the net. However, Mbongeni Mzimela pulled off the save of the match to deny him.
That save proved decisive as the game finished 0-0 and the spoils were shared at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
