Supersport United beat Benoni Premier United 1-0 in a Castle Premiership encounter in Germiston on Friday night thanks to a goal by Katlego Mphela.

Benoni United to their credit defended well but never really looked like troubling the Superport defence. The homeside dominated possession but never made their numerous scoring opportunities count with Mphela being the chief culprit.

Patrick Mayo and Bennet Mnguni made their debuts for Benoni with Mayo being substituted at half time replaced by Nkosinathi Ngema.

In the 3rd minute Supersport nearly took the lead when a Katlego Mashego shot thundered against the upright.

Bennet Mnguni nearly gave Benoni the lead in the 20th minute when his shot went narrowly past the post.

Mphela ran down the right side cutting into the box but instead of passing across the face of the goal to Diane Klate he had a shot that went well wide in the 30th minute.

Mashego came close to scoring when he tried to chip keeper Lance Niewenhuis, the ball went narrowly over the bar.

In the 57th minute Senzo Ndlovu nearly scored for Supersport when his left-footed shot went over the bar.

Superport were awarded a rather dubious penalty in the 63rd minute when Ngema fouled Fikru Tefera just outside the box, but the referee awarded a penalty giving Ngema a yellow card.

Mphela scored with the penalty kick sending the keeper the wrong way.

Niewenhuis made a good save when he stopped a shot from Mphela in the 69th minute.

Late in the game Rudi Isaacs’ long-range shot was well saved by Niewenhuis.

Klate had two opportunities late in the game but was kept at bay by the keeper.
