Maritzburg United returned to winning ways with a good 2-1 win over fellow Coastal side Bay United in a thrilling game at the Woodburn Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Bay United dominated the opening stages but failed to break down the defence of the Team of Choice and consequently had to shoot from distance.
United’s first decent attempt at goal came when Brice Aka found himself with the ball at his feet after a quick break, but his fierce shot was blocked by Arthur Bartman. The rebound fell to Collen Zimba, on the left edge of the box, who also let fly with a ferocious shot, but again Bartman did brilliantly diving to his right to tip the all round the post for a corner.
Brice Aka had another chance to grab the lead for his team in the 29th minute when a cross from Dikulu Bageta found him unmarked inside the box, but he headed the ball just wide.
The half ended 0-0.
The second half started at a frantic pace and one only had to wait six minutes after the restart to see the opening goal. After a beautiful passing movement by Maritzburg, Peter Petersen played a delightful pass to Tony Tsabedze, who fired into the top corner.
Bay United equalized almost immediately when Abayomi Adebayo levelled matters for his side in the 57th minute. Jimmy Zakazaka broke down the left wing and produced a low cross into the centre of the box where Adebayo snuck in front of his defender to score with a low shot.
Maritzburg's response was instantaneous when Brice Aka put them ahead only two minutes later.
This time Lynch Pule supplied the pass from the right hand channel that found Aka on the edge of the 18-yard box. Aka showed some great individual skill as turned on the ball and finished clinically into the bottom right-hand corner to make it 2-1.
