English Premier League match report Chelsea v Arsenal 17 September 2017

Posted: 17 September 2017 Time: 13:26

Chelsea and Arsenal could not be separated , as they played out a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Arsene Wenger made a surprise omission from his starting line-up as Alexis Sanchez started on the bench, while Mesut Ozil missed out through injury.

After a quiet start to the encounter, the game's first chance arrived after 20 minutes when Sead Kolašinac forced Thibaut Courtois into a fine save with a powerful effort.

Chelsea should have taken the lead two minutes later when Pedro was played through on goal, however the winger failed to beat Petr Cech from close range.

The Gunners went close again after 32 minutes through Granit Xhaka's long range effort that sailed narrowly wide of Courtois' goal.

The woodwork then came to Chelsea's rescue just before the break when Aaron Ramsey weaved his way into the box before hitting the post.

Antonio Conte opted for a change at the start of the second half as Bakayoko replaced Pedro.

Both sides were finding it tough to create chances in the second stanza, which prompted Wenger to introduce Sancez while Conte responded by withdrawing Willian for Eden Hazard.

Arsenal thought they had the ball in the back of the net on 75th minutes, but Shkodran Mustafi's header was flagged offside.

Cech was called upon five minutes later, as he produced a fine save to keep out Hazard's close range strike.

Both clubs went in search of a goal in the remaining 10 minutes of the second half as they pushed for three points.

However, Chelsea were reduced to 10 men in the 87th minute when David Luiz was shown a straight red card for late challenge.

Nevertheless, the score remained goalless at the full-time whistle.
