Maritzburg United snatched victory two minutes from time when Dikilu Bageta converted from the penalty spot to beat BidVest Wits 2-1 at the Woodburn Stadium on Tuesday afternoon in an Absa Premiership clash.
The game started at a frantic pace with both teams going toe-to-toe and trading blow for blow. No team really took control of the midfield and hence the game had an open flow to it with each side pressing forward in attack.
The Team of Choice came close to scoring the game's opening goal in the 18th minute when Brice Aka tested Energy Murambadoro to the fullest with a thunderous right foot shot. The Students' goalie did brilliantly, diving full stretch to his right to parry the shot around the post for a corner kick.
Maritzburg only had to wait a further four minutes before they went in front through a Sipho Mngomezulu goal. The United player let loose from 20 yards with his left boot and Murambadoro had no answer for his venomous effort, 1-0.
The Clever Boys responded almost immediately when Samuel Ramasoeu broke down the right flank in the 27th minute and supplied an inch perfect cross to find Tebego Langerman unmarked inside the Maritzburg area. Langerman made no mistake as he clinically headed the ball home into the bottom right corner of the goal, 1-1.
From the rest of the half both teams tightened up in defence and were determined not to concede any more goals before the break.
Three minutes after the restart and the Team of Choice nearly took the lead for the second time through substitute Collen Zimba who rose highest to head a right wing cross goalwards. Again Murambadoro was at hand to deny the United player with yet another fantastic save.
Zimba proved to be a real torn in the side of the Wits defence as he constantly found space and caused problems. He came close to scoring again in the 57th minute but again Murambadoro denied his right-footed effort.
The only ray of light for the Students came from Sifiso Myeni, who chose to run at defenders when in possession of the ball. If anything was going to come of this game for Wits it was going to happen as a result of something Myeni did.
Eventually the Wits defence could not deal with Zimba which resulted in one of the Students' players pulling him down inside the 18 yard area two minutes from time. Bageta calmly stepped up and slotted the ball home from the penalty spot, 2-1.
The game ended 2-1 and Maritzburg picked up a vital three points near the bottom of the table. Wits, on the other hand, will be disappointed with the loss considering they could have moved three places up the league table if they won.
