SuperSport champs again

SuperSport United held out for a nervy goalless draw with Santos at the Coetzenburg Stadium on Saturday afternoon to secure the 2008/09 Absa Premiership title.

Matsatsantsa finished level on points with Orlando Pirates – who beat AmaZulu 3-1 in Johannesburg – but their superior goal difference saw them top the table and successfully defend their league championship.

The Tshwane side dominated most of the match against the People’s Team, but a pair of resolute defences and some very nervous players saw the game end goalless with hardly any clear cut opportunities.

The best chances of the game definitely fell to the visitors, particularly two efforts in the first 45 minutes that should have settled SuperSport’s nerves.

A counter from the champions saw Anthony Laffor use his pace to have a clear shooting opportunity, but the Liberian shanked the effort off his shin and it was easily saved by Lee Langeveldt.

Veteran striker Glen Salmon was a constant thorn in the side of the Santos defence and he came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 37th minute, beating the goalkeeper in the air only to see his header rattle the crossbar.

Langeveldt made one further key save in the first half, doing well to catch an angled effort from Lance Davids that threatened to loop over him.

The second half was a tense affair, with United going very defensive in the last 15 minutes, though they never really looked under much pressure from a Santos side who couldn’t match their opponents’ physicality in midfield.
