Bay United relegated

Posted: 2 May 2009 Time: 22:35

Bay United’s relegation from the Absa Premiership was all but mathematically confirmed after they went down 5-0 to Bidvest Wits in Johannesburg on Saturday evening.

The result means that Umlilo remain rooted to the bottom of the table with 21 points to their name. They can reach a maximum of 27 points if they win their two remaining league fixtures, but second-from-bottom Bloemfontein Celtic already have that number of points and a massively superior goal difference, meaning the Eastern Cape side can begin planning a return to the first division for the 2009/10 season.

In fact, Bay’s relegation could be confirmed as early as Sunday afternoon if Celtic manage at least a draw in their home game against Platinum Stars.

Wits, meanwhile, move up three places into fourth, level on 42 points with Ajax but placed ahead of the Cape Town team thanks to a better goal difference. The Clever Boys have managed to maintain a semblance of consistency throughout the season for the first time in several years and coach Roger De Sa will hope to build on this for the next Absa Premiership season.

And he can be well pleased with this performance, even if it came against a team that is bottom of the log and clearly low on morale and motivation.

The Clever Boys raced into a two goal lead inside the opening 20 minutes, with Calvin Kadi finishing off a Tebogo Langerman cross in the seventh and Ashraf Hendricks rising highest in the penalty area to head home a corner kick in the 19th.

Langerman got his name on the score sheet in injury time at the end of the first half, tucking home the third goal after a good cross from man-of-the-match Sifiso Myeni.

Less than 20 minutes into the second half Wits made it 4-0, with Rene Richards coring from the penalty spot after referee Peter Mabuza had awarded the spot kick for a foul on Kadi by Cyril Nzama.

Junaid Mashamaite completed the rout in the dying minutes with a clever lob over Bay goalkeeper Arthur Bartman.
