Wits, Usuthu in stalemate

Posted: 6 May 2009 Time: 22:54

What took place at the Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday night was one of the most exciting 0-0 draws one could ever witness.

With both AmaZulu and Bidvest Wits looking to secure their place in the top eight, neither side, despite all their free-flowing football and attacking flair, could find a goal that would most likely have settled the game.

With only one point separating the Students and Usuthu in the standings, the game always promised to be a close one and that is what we got. Both sides started the game excitingly, looking to press forward, not scared to send men forward in attack. The tactics were clear from the outset as they proceeded to shoot on sight, but with woeful results.

The first chance came as early as the first minute when AmaZulu’s leading scorer, Dumisani Ngwenya, had a 20-yard shot superbly saved by Energy Murambadoro. The only other time the Wits goalie was really called into action was in the 26th minute when Bradley Ritson rose above the defence to head the ball goalwards, but Murambadoro produced another fantastic save.

Both teams made good use of the flanks as well, with AmaZulu attacking out wide through Thabo Mabaso and Japhet Zwane, while Wits employed Tebogo Langerman down the right.

The Clever Boys’ best chance came five minutes from the break when Ashraf Hendricks snuck in front of the Usuthu defence to head a free-kick goalwards. But Kakonje Kalililo was at hand to deny the Wits defender with a good save.

The second half was more of the same as the game flowed from end to end and both sides continued to waste opportunities.

The game did end on a sour note when Reagan Noble was dismissed a minute from time for a professional foul. But in the end a draw was a fair result, though not really one that really helps either team.
