Telkom Knockout last-16 report Orlando Pirates Golden Arrows

Posted: 23 October 2016 Time: 13:27

Orlando Pirates edged Golden Arrows 2-1 in their Telkom Knockout opener in Soweto on Sunday.

Luvuyo Memela scored a superb 73rd-minute winner after Wayde Jooste cancelled out Mpho Makola's early opener for the Buccaneers at Orlando Stadium.

Bafana Bafana midfielder Makola struck 10 minutes in with a fine strike from outside the box.

Jooste equalised with a free-kick just past the hour-mark, but Memela decided matters with a low shot after dribbling past three players.

Pirates joined Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs, SuperSport United, Baroka FC, Free State Stars, Highlands Park and Cape Town City in the next round of the competition.

Mamelodi Sundowns will battle Polokwane City on Thursday for the remaining quarter-final spot.
