Platinum Stars earned a valuable point as they held Ajax Cape Town to a 1-1 draw at the Newlands Stadium on Wednesday night.
Bradley Grobler scored for Stars and the Ajax goal was scored by Cole Alexander.
The visiting side scored first in the first half, but once Ajax had equalised midway through the second stanza, Stars were forced to weather a late onslaught as the Cape side pushed for maximum points.
Ajax looked in command early on, although with the exception of a Brett Evans shot that was saved by Wayne Sandilands and a couple of forays down the wing by Franklyn Cale, the Urban Warriors did not pose much threat to the Stars defence.
Despite enjoying less of the possession early on, it was the Tycoons who opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Bradley Grobler raced on to a Luis Renteria through ball and emphatically beat Andre Petim.
The game remained fairly evenly balanced following the goal – while Ajax looked to stamp their authority on the game and force an equaliser, Stars also showed promise when going forward as they looked to add to their goal tally, rather than defend their slender lead.
Five minutes before the break Grobler came close to adding a second when his shot from outside the box flew just wide.
Just before the half time whistle Dipsy Selolwane tried to level matters for Ajax, but his 25-yard effort was well saved by Sandilands.
The second half saw the Urban Warriors begin to get a grip on the game, although they still struggled to create chances in front of goal.
It was testament to the Stars defence that the only chance Ajax had in the first 15 minutes of the second stanza was a Selolwane free kick.
But midway through the half Stars resistance finally crumbled when Cole Alexander, on the field for less than a minute, chested down Sameehg Doutie’s cross before stroking home the equaliser.
The final 20 minutes of the game was dominated by Ajax as they pushed hard for a winner.
Balls were pumped into the box on a regular basis, but the Stars defence held firm to ensure that the Cape side did not have any clear-cut chances to grab a late winner.
