Kaizer Chiefs kept themselves in contention for the Absa Premiership title when they beat BidVest Wits 2-1 at the Super Stadium in Atteridgeville on Saturday evening.
Abia Nale scored for the Amakhosi as well as a goal from Jose Torrealba handed the Soweto giants all three points. Sifiso Myeni countered for the Clever Boys, but his goal came too late for the visitors.
The result sees Chiefs move into third place on the log table, six adrift of leaders SuperSport United. Wits remain in sixth place.
Amakhosi almost got off to a perfect start with an early goal from Siphiwe Tshabalala, but the woodwork denied the dreadlocked winger with Wits’ goalkeeper Energy Murambadoro well beaten.
The Clever Boys hit the frame of the goal themselves in the 13th minute, Tefu Mashamaite powering a header from Marawaan Bantam’s corner kick.
In the 25th minute, Nale scored his first goal for the club, tucking the ball home from close range when a combination of Arthur Zwane and Thabang Rooi had set the chance up for the former Golden Arrows attacker.
The rest of the first half and the opening passages of the second belonged to Wits, who played some good football at times. However, Chiefs scored their second in the 60th minute through a superb finish from Torrealba.
The host should have added to their advantage thereafter, but they missed out on numerous opportunities to add to the score line.
Myeni then pulled a goal back in the second minute of injury time, but the referee had soon blown the final whistle and confirmed an important victory for Chiefs.
With SuperSport not in league action this weekend, Amakhosi and Orlando Pirates have made some key ground on the leaders (Pirates beat Thanda Royal Zulu 2-0 earlier in the day), and the title race is shaping up to be something very special indeed.
