SuperSport maintain lead

A 14th-minute goal by Bongani Khumalo was enough to ensure that SuperSport United maintained their lead at the top of the Absa Premiership thanks to a 1-0 win against Bloemfontein Celtic at Super Stadium.

Matsatsantsa started this game knowing that a win would further increase their chances of defending their League title. They certainly started the game in an impressive manner, applying their usual tactics of attacking down the flanks.

Celtic seemed to have predicted this tactic, but still found it difficult to cut the routes to the wings down, finding it especially difficult to deal with the in-form Daine Klate. Their only solution appeared to be that of chopping the wings down, giving fouls away at random.

Eventually Celtic were made to pay for their poor tackling when a left wing free-kick resulted in the game’s opening goal. Klate, as is expected of him, whipped in a tantalising cross that found the head of Bongani Khumalo, who made no mistake from six yards out.

Celtic had no real answer for the skill and pace of the defending champions as they struggled to get hold of the ball and make anything happen.

The only person who seemed like he could cause any problems for the United defence was Gert Schalkwyk, who had numerous shots on goal from distance, but they all lackedsting and were comfortably saved by Denis Onyango.

The second half saw a clinical performance by SuperSport as they took control of the midfield and stopped Celtic from creating any dangerous chances. Gavin Hunt’s men did not score any more goals, but they defended like champions, assuring that they maintained their lead at the top of the Premiership table.
