Urban Warriors suffer home defeat

Despite creating by far the better chances of the match, Ajax Cape Town found themselves on the end of a 1-0 loss to Golden Arrows at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday night.

The goal was scored by Kagisho Dikgacoi. Ajax had Thomrick October sent off in the second half.

First half honours were fairly evenly shared as neither side really had the upper-hand, with half chances the order of the day.

Abafana Bes’thende defender Siyabonga Sangweni had a good opportunity in the second minute when the ball found its way to him across the box, but he hesitated too long and his shot was blocked.

The visiting side were displaying a greater sense of urgency in the early minutes, which saw Philani Shange having two attempts on goal before 10 minutes were on the clock.

Having managed to settle down, the Cape side started to look threatening down the flanks, however, the final product was lacking and with Thulani Serero playing too deep behind Mabuthi Khenyeza, there was no real link up play for Ajax up front.

Khenyeza did have a decent opportunity in the 26th minute when he found space outside the box, but he rushed his shot when he had more time.

Looking to catch up with Khenyeza in the goal-scoring charts, Arrows striker Richard Henyekane burst through on goal in the 36th minute, but Andre Petim made sure the angle was closed and made a good save.

The second half provided far more entertainment, with the home run generally making the running and creating numerous opportunities.

Doutie had a great chance to level matters following Brett Evans’ ball into the box, but he put his header well over the goal.

Defender Eduardo Ferreira missed an equally good chance when he put his volley into the stands after a corner kick had resulted in a goal mouth scramble.

As is so often the case in football, the team that absorbs all the pressure goes on to break away and score, and that is exactly what transpired in the 70th minute when quick counter attack was finished off with a stunningly effective strike from Kagisho Dikgacoi.

The Urban Warriors then had salt rubbed in their wounds when Thomrick October was given a straight red for an over-the-top challenge.

It just wasn’t to be Ajax’s night as Khenyeza blazed a close range header over the bar and then Sifiso Vilakazi had a goal disallowed.
