Chippa United Ajax Cape Town Absa Premiership PSL match report

Posted: 6 May 2017 Time: 14:10

Ajax Cape Town moved into the top-half of the Absa Premiership standings with a narrow 1-0 win over Chippa United at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium on Saturday.

The only goal of the game came late into proceedings as Thabo Mosadi pounced to put his side ahead with only ten minutes of time remaining.

Ajax were presented with the first real chance of the encounter as Prince Nxumalo forced a near post save out of Daniel Akpeyi with a shot from a tight angle under pressure from two defenders.

The home side slowly began to asset themselves and at the quarter-hour mark Lerato Manzini did well to take the ball on his chest and turn towards goal only to fire a tame effort straight at Brandon Petersen.

Only moments later Petersen wasll called upon to produce a more impressive piece of glovework as he tipped Strydom Wambi's fierce half-volley over the bar.

With the encounter heading towards the 30-minute mark Phetolo Sekome tried his luck from range but his effort was watched all the way by the Ajax stopper.

Straight down at the other end Mark Mayambela eased an excellent pass behind the defence for Mosadi to run on to but Akpeyi dived at his feet to deny Ajax an opener.

A further ten minutes later a searing free-kick from Roscoe Pietersen was touched over the crossbar and from the resulting corner Pietersen failed to find hit the target with his header.

Minutes before the interval the lively Paseka Mako raced down the flank and cut back brilliantly only for David Zulu to skew wide.

Five minutes out of the break Chippa were almost punished when Akpeyi touched a low cross back into danger but Bergman bailed him out as he hacked clear.

Manzini caused problems for the Ajax defence and smashed the ball goalwards from a tight angle but Petersen was equal to the effort, as he was minutes later to keep out Sekome's direct free-kick.

The deadlock was eventually broken by the visitors as Mosadi capitalised on a dreadful defensive mix-up  and showed terrific composure to tuck home with Akpeyi off his line but two defenders between him and the goal.

Chippa endeavoured to get back into the game with Wambi heading over from close range but with Bergman injured and all substitutes having been made it proved too difficult to claw themselves back into the game.
