Absa Premiership match report Bidvest Wits vs SuperSport United

Posted: 25 April 2017 Time: 18:03

Bidvest Wits saw their Absa Premiership title hopes take a blow as they slumped to a 1-0 loss against SuperSport United at Bidvest Stadium.

The match proved a scrappy affair in the opening quarter, with numerous fouls and set-pieces leaving the ball bogged down in midfield.

Wits started enjoying more chances as the half went on but lacked the killer instinct as they let a number of decent set-piece opportunities go to waste.

Thabo Mnyamane finally threatened to break the deadlock just after the 30-minute mark but could only fire his shot wide of the mark, while Morgan Gould proved equally wasteful a few minutes later after sending his header off target.

Wits had a good chance to take the lead into the break as Gabadinho Mhango did well to find Eleazar Rodgers, who had plenty of space to pick out a cross but failed to find the unmarked Daine Klate in the area.

Mnyamane had a great chance moments after the restart after breaking into the area, only for his touch to let him down and allow the goalkeeper to gather the danger.

Jeremy Brockie then managed to create a decent chance after getting on to the end of a delivery to flick his header goalwards, but Moeneeb Josephs was well positioned to make an easy save.

Teboho Mokoena then came close with a free-kick but sent his effort just wide of the mark as SuperSport turned up the pressure in the second period.

And they were finally rewarded as Thuso Phala made the breakthrough with 67 minutes gone, chipping the ball over the goalkeeper after being played in by Mnyamane.

Josephs then had to be at his best to prevent Brockie from doubling the visitors’ lead after the New Zealand international had been played clean through on goal before the keeper was again at it moments later to keep out Michael Boxall from close-range.
