Absa Premiership match report Mamelodi Sundowns vs Ajax Cape Town

Posted: 25 April 2017 Time: 17:41

Mamelodi Sundowns took a big step towards the Absa Premiership title as they carved out a 2-0 win over Ajax Cape Town at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday.

The opening 10 minutes proved a lively affair as both sides looked determined to stamp their mark on the game early, although both goalkeepers went untested, largely thanks to some resolute defending.

Sundowns had a chance to work something from a free-kick in a promising position after 16 minutes, but Percy Tau's shot dipped the wrong side of the crossbar.

Sundowns should have taken the lead with 24 minutes gone as Mzikayise Mashaba broke free down the left wing before firing a low ball across the area, which Tau let run through his legs to leave Khama Billiat with the whole goal to aim for but he somehow contrived to balloon the ball over.

Ajax goalkeeper Brandon Petersen needed to be at his very best with just over half an hour gone as he produced a sublime diving, one-handed save to keep out Tau from almost point-blank range.

It was then Denis Onyango’s turn to impress at the other end as he got down well to keep out Ayanda Makua’s shot from a tight angle following some excellent build-up play from the Urban Warriors.

Hlompho Kekana came within an inch of scoring an absolutely stunning opener five minutes after the restart as he lined up a shot some 40 yards out before unleashing a scorching effort which crashed off the crossbar with the goalkeeper beaten all ends up.

The Brazilians finally broke the deadlock with 68 minutes gone on the clock, Billiat doing brilliantly to turn his man before breaking through on goal and releasing Tau, who calmly clipped the ball over the onrushing Petersen and in at the near post.

Six minutes later and Pitso Mosimane’s men were in cruise control as Themba Zwane had the simple task of tapping into an empty net after Anthony Laffor unselfishly squared the ball to his team-mate when one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
