Absa Premiership match report Cape Town City vs Kaizer Chiefs

Posted: 25 April 2017 Time: 17:17

Cape Town City dramatically grabbed a 3-2 win over Kaizer Chiefs in their Absa Premiership clash at the Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Goals from Aubrey Ngoma and Lebogang Manyama were cancelled out by Siphiwe Tshabalala and Joseph Molangoane, before Judas Moseamedi popped up to seal the victory at the death.

Ngoma opened the scoring in the 16th minute as he skipped past three Chiefs defenders before firing over Bruce Bvuma into the roof of the net.

Less than five minutes later, though, the ball fell kindly for Tshabalala on the edge of the box and the Chiefs stalwart delicately lobbed over Shu-Aib Walters, who was caught off his line.

Shortly after the half-hour mark, Molangoane did all the hard work to cut inside and beat two City defenders to create space for himself in front of goal, but his tame effort failed to trouble Walters.

Following a swift counter-attack, Manyama collected a cross at the far-post before putting the ball through George Maluleka's legs and firing beyond Bvuma, into the net from an acute angle in the 35th minute.

An exhilirating first half came to a close with the hosts in the driver's seat, while Chiefs were left to ponder on how to fix their defence for the second half, with Bvuma under siege in his first professional appearance.

The visitors came out with a vengeance in the second half, with coach Steve Komphela making a double change five minutes in that saw William Twala and Gustavo Paez enter the fray.

Paez's first touch saw him spring into space inside the City box, with his cross flashing across the face of goal before Vincent Kobola intercepted ahead of an onrushing Twala.

At the other end, Lehlohonolo Majoro squandered a great chance to extend his side's lead as he found himself free at the near-post but he failed to direct his header on target.

Bvuma was then called on to deny Roland Putsche's effort from distance in the 52nd minute, as it kept low and forced the Chiefs reserve keeper down to his left – a good confidence booster after twice being easily beaten in the first half.

Manyama then missed a hat-trick of chances for the hosts as he flashed his effort wide of the far-post after breaking through the opposition defence once more, thanks to good work from Bongolethu Jayiya down the right-side flank.

Paez then created an opening at the other end as he rounded Walters after a good ball from Tshabalala, but his effort at goal was spectacularly cut off by Robyn Johannes.

Molangoane should have done better on the hour-mark when he was picked out in the centre of the box and in acres of space, but managed to send his shot over the bar under no real pressure.

Amakhosi, though, were eventually back in it midway through the second half as Tshabalala played a good ball through for Paez, who rounded Walters before unselfishly crossing for Molangoane to tap in the equaliser from close range.

Majoro had an excellent chance to restore his team's lead in the 73rd minute as he sent his effort from six yards out way over the crossbar, with only Bvuma to beat.

A flurry of missed opportunities on either end late on made for a nervy end to the match for both teams, but substitute Moseamedi popped up to head home in the final minute of stoppage time to break Amakhosi hearts.

The win sees the Citizens remain top of the log with 49 points from 25 games, while Chiefs slip to fourth.
