Absa Premiership match report Bidvest Wits vs Platinum Stars

Posted: 1 April 2017 Time: 17:09

Bidvest Wits hoisted themselves top of the Absa Premiership standings as they carved out a 2-0 win over Platinum Stars at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday.

Second-half goals from Phakamani Mahlambi and Daine Klate saw the Clever Boys climb above Cape Town City at the top of the table, while Dikwena are in danger of dropping out the top eight this weekend.

The opening quarter of the match proved a tight affair, with both midfields seemingly canceling each other out as both Darren Keet and Mbongeni Mzimela remained untested in their respective goals.

With 27 minutes gone Stars looked to have taken the lead as Bongi Ntuli put the ball in the back of the net, although any celebrations were cut short after the linesman had flagged for offside.

Gabadinho Mhango looked to go for the spectacular with just a few minutes remaining in the first-half as he connected with an acrobatic overhead kick, although he was unable to find the target, while the off-side flag would have rendered any goal inconsequential.

Daine Klate then had a good chance to snatch the lead before the break from a free-kick in a dangerous position, but he was unable to keep his shot down and rocketed the ball just inches over the bar.

Mabena wasted a glorious chance to give Stars the lead three minutes after the restart, somehow contriving to place his shot wide after staring at an empty net following a lightning-quick counter.

Mhango again tried his luck with 10 minutes gone in the second-half but once more he was unable to test the goalkeeper as he dragged his shot past the right-hand post.

Just three minutes later and Stars were made to pay for their wastefulness as Wits opened the scoring, Phakamani Mahlambi tapping into an empty net after Mzimela could only parry an initial shot into the youngster’s path.

Ben Motshwari came close to adding a scorching second with 66 minutes gone but saw his pile-driver of a shot only narrowly fly over the crossbar, while at the other end, Keet needed to be sharp to keep out Ntuli’s well-struck effort.

The Wits goalkeeper was then at his best a few moments later to keep out Vuyo Mere’s goal-bound free-kick, before Ntuli once again spurned a good chance after firing wide of the mark.

The Clever Boys started turning up the pressure in the final 10 minutes, with Hlatshwayo’s shot parried into the path of Thabang Monare, who was unable to turn home from close-range, while Malajila headed agonisingly over from six yards out.

And, with justthree minutes remaining the Students made sure of the points, Monare turning in the box and winning a penalty, which Klate stepped up to drive home past the goalkeeper.
