Absa Premiership match report Maritzburg United vs Ajax Cape Town

Posted: 1 April 2017 Time: 19:21

Maritzburg United managed to climb into the top half of the Absa Premiership standings following their 2-1 win over Ajax Cape Town at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday.

Deolin Mekoa looked to work something for the Team of Choice in the opening two minutes but could only fire a shot harmlessly over the crossbar, while Denis Weidlich followed suit a few minutes later, this time hammering wide to the right.

Mark Mayambela then went in search of a response for Ajax and almost found one midway through the second-half, only to see his rasping drive fizz only inches off target.

Rodrick Kabwe then managed to finally test Virgil Vries with a shot after 28 minutes but the Maritzburg goalkeeper remained untroubled as he made a comfortable save, while at the other end Evans Rusike put his effort just wide of the post.

With just seven minutes of the first-half remaining, though, Maritzburg got their goal, Andrea Fileccia opening his account for the club with a smart side-footed effort.

A tame start to the second-half finally burst into life after 58 minutes as Ajax goalkeeper Jody February needed to be at his best to keep out an excellent free-kick as Martizburg went in search of a second goal.

The Team of Choice would eventually double their lead with 65 minutes gone, Brian Onyango heading home past the keeper from Mekoa’s corner.

Ajax finally managed to pull a goal back with seven minutes remaining as Thabo Mosadi’s corner found Aubrey Funga, who made no mistake to head home and hand the visitors a glimmer of hope.

Kurt Lentjies then twice threatened in the closing stages, first seeing his effort neatly saved by the keeper, before rifling a shot wide a few moments later.
