Orlando Pirates were again forced to come from behind to rescue a draw as Tuesday’s Orlando Stadium encounter against title-chasing SuperSport United finished 1-1.
The Buccaneers were dealt an early blow as Ntsikelelo Nyauza needed to come off injured after just 10 minutes, with Thabo Matlaba taking his place.
SuperSport came closest to finding the back of the net in the opening 20 minutes, with Jeremy Brockie feeding the ball through for Thabo Mnyamane, who took one touch to set himself before unleashing a fierce effort which curled just wide of the post.
Matsatsantsa went close again midway through the half but Brockie couldn’t make the right connection on his volley from close range, while at the other end, Dove Wome could only direct his pile-driver straight down the throat of Reyaad Pieterse.
Pirates looked destined to score five minutes after the restart as Matlaba put in a telling low delivery to find Thamsanqa Gabuza at the far-post, but the forward somehow contrived to blaze the ball over the bar from just a few yards out.
Kjell Jonevret’s men were soon made to pay for that miss as SuperSport took the lead, Mnyamane barging through the defence to pick up a flicked ball before hammering an unstoppable drive into the roof of the net.
SuperSport again had the ball in the back of the net with 66 minutes gone on the clock as Brockie was played in behind the defence before firing home, although the goal would not count as the linesman controversially flagged for off-side when it had been Kingston Nkhatha who had strayed.
With around 15 minutes remaining, Pirates had a golden chance to level matters as a low delivery came through a crowd of bodies in the area before rolling to Matlaba, who had the whole of the goal to aim for but instead blazed his shot miles over the bar to the dismay of the Orlando Stadium.
Just moments later, though, the Buccaneers got their equaliser, subsitute Tendai Ndoro winning his header at the far-post, with a clearance falling to Thembinkosi Lorch, who fired low under the keeper and into the back of the net.
