Ajax Cape Town Cape Town City PSL derby Absa Premiership report

Posted: 11 February 2017 Time: 20:02

Cape Town City saw off the derby challenge of Ajax Cape Town 2-0 at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, and moved to the top of the Absa Premiership log.

There was a lot riding on the game for both sides because, besides the rivalry between the two clubs fuelled by City owner John Comitis' beef with his former team, the teams are at oppostite ends of the table.

After an exciting start to the match, which included pre-game fireworks to get the modest crowd going, City took the lead in spectacular fashion in the 25th minute.

Leholohonolo Majoro miscontrolled a great counter-attcking pass from Sibusiso Masina but still forced Jody February to dive at his feet to block, however, the loose ball fell to Aubrey Ngoma outside the area and he brilliantly placed it over the scrambling goalkeeper and backtracking defenders.

Then just before half-time it was 2-0, with Ngoma a key man again. Erwin Isaacs turned the ball into his own net while making a desperate defensive challenge following a bursting run and dangerous cross from the man of the match.

Stanley Menzo's side pushed to get back into the match in the second half but did not have enough to trouble Eric Tinkler's City, who saw out the game quite comfortably.

The result moves City to the top of the Absa Premiership standings, three points ahead of Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United, although they have played more matches.
