Free State Stars Cape Town City PSL Absa Premiership report

Posted: 21 December 2016 Time: 17:49

Free State Stars were handed a late penalty to claim all three points from Cape Town City in their final Absa Premiership game of 2016.

With the game still goalless in the 79th minute, the home side were awarded a contentious spot-kick after a Danny Venter shot was blocked by Robyn Johannes in the area.

Thokozani Sekotlong stepped up to convert past Shu-Aib Walters in the City goal to give his side a much-needed boost with the game heading into the final minutes.

Shortly after the goal City's night went from bad to worse when Mpho Matsi was dismissed for a second caution following a foul on Sekotlong, reducing City to 10 men as Giovanni Solinas' men held on for the win.

The result moves Stars out of the relegation places, a point above Highlands Park and two above Baroka FC, who take on Mamelodi Sundowns on Thursday.

Eric Tinkler’s City, meanwhile, remain second on the log and fail to overtake leaders Bidvest Wits, who have a game in hand.
