Ajax Cape Town Mamelodi Sundowns PSL Absa Premiership match report

Posted: 30 November 2016 Time: 18:30

Ajax Cape Town stopped the Mamelodi Sundowns train in its tracks with a convincing 2-0 victory in their Absa Premiership clash at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday.

In-form Sundowns tried to assert their dominance early on and succeeded for the most part, knocking the ball around at pace and with intensity.

Percy Tau’s first involvement saw him burst through the middle at pace and Rivaldo Coetzee, caught out by his pace, had to bring him down and was cautioned after just seven minutes.

But Ajax were resolute and kept the African champions at bay for the opening 20 minutes, eventually getting a foothold in the game and creating their own chances.

In fact, the Urban Warriors had the best chance of the first half in the 28th minute when Thabo Mosadi did some great work down the right to put it on a plate for an unmarked Mark Mayambela, nine yards out near the penalty spot, but ‘Professor’ put the finish over the bar.

The home side were certainly not sitting back and attacked Sundowns at every opportunity, but were fortunate to see Hlompho Kekana’s long-range strike dip and hit the top of Jody February’s crossbar in the 35th minute.

Mosadi kept coming back at Sundowns and Thabo Nthethe had to produce a fantastic defensive header to keep out a dangerous cross from the winger, this time from the left flank, as an exiting first half ended goalless.

At the start of the second half Tau threatened Coetzee again as he drove into the area and was about to pull the trigger but the Bafana Bafana defender made an excellent recovery tackle to keep the scores level.

Then Ajax, who had gained in confidence the longer the scores remained level, deservedly went ahead in the 71st minute as Mosadi swept the ball home at the far post following a good right-wing cross by Bantu Mzwakali.

And just two minutes later it was 2-0, a tap-in finished off by Ndiviwe Mdabuka, but all the credit must go to Mayambela, whose brilliant stopover on the byline totally took out Nthethe before he laid the ball on a platter for his teammate.

With Keagan Dolly already on at half-time for the injured Anthony Laffor, who had complained of a sore ankle and groin, Pitso Mosimane threw on Khama Billiat and Leonardo Castro as ‘CBD’ reunited for the first time in several matches.

But they could not get a goal back despite their best efforts as the Urban Warriors secured their first home victory and second win under Stanley Menzo.
