SuperSport United Bidvest Wits PSL Absa Premiership match report

Posted: 29 November 2016 Time: 18:12

SuperSport United extended their unbeaten run to 13 games in all competitions with a 2-0 league victory over title rivals Bidvest Wits at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday night.

Bafana Bafana defender Clayton Daniels and in-form striker Thabo Mnyamane both struck in the second half in Nelspruit.

United consequently joined Wits on 20 points - a point behind log leaders Cape Town City, who drew 1-1 with ten-man Kaizer Chiefs on the same evening.

Wits winger Daine Klate threatened 10 minutes in, flashing a shot wide against his former team after being set up by fellow ex-Matsatsantsa ace Elias Pelembe.

At the other end, Mnyamane tested goalkeeper Darren Keet with a half-volley on the half-hour mark following a cross by Aubrey Modiba.

The Students nearly stole ahead in the 35th minute, but Eleazar Rodgers' looping header was kept out by Reyaad Pieterse after a floated setpiece from Klate.

SuperSport mentor Stuart Baxter made a change at the break, bringing on industrious midfielder Michael Morton for Reneilwe Letsholonyane, while Wits counterpart Gavin Hunt kept things as is.

The visitors had an early chance in the second period, but Hellings Mhango drilled his shot straight at a grateful Pieterse.

Pelembe tried his luck soon after as he skied an effort for the Clever Boys.

Daniels then drew first blood in the 64th minute following a goalmouth scramble.

Ben Motshwari threatened a swift equaliser as his 66th minute strike triggered a stop from the alert Pieterse.

However, Mnyamane doubled Matsatsantsa's advantage four minutes later from a free-kick for his fourth league goal of the season.

Both sides had chances in the latter stages through the likes of Mnyamane, Wits debutant Siboniso Gaxa and Students attacker Mogakolodi Ngele.
