Schalkwyk gets debut hat-trick

Gert Schalkwyk could prove to be Bloemfontein Celtic's saviour for the remainder of the 2008/09 season, after he scored a hat-trick to help the struggling team thrash visitors Thanda Royal Zulu 6-1 at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Phunya Sele Sele are still bottom of the Absa Premiership log, despite producing their best performance of the campaign to date, but they are now within striking distance of second-from-bottom Maritzburg United and have a game in hand on the KwaZulu-Natal side.

Mark Mayambela got the scoreboard moving when he headed home the opening goal from Moses Spandeel's corner kick in the 28th minute, and Schalkwyk got his first just four minutes later, drilling home a low shot after good work by Petrus Mahlatsi to set up the scoring chance.

Schalkwyk, who is on-loan from Kaizer Chiefs, then effectively secured the points for the hosts when he turned home Mayambela's pass from close range in injury time at the end of the first half, and within a minute of the restart the midfielder turned provider, as he set up Mahlatsi to score goal number four.

Thanda's Nkosinathi Nhleko pulled one back in the 67th minute, but Schalkwyk completed a five-star performance when he found the top corner with a beautiful shot in the 72nd, and Amabhubesi keeper Aubrey Mathibe had no chance of denying the Celtic man.

Substitute Geoffrey Serunkuma wrapped up a superb performance from Owen Da Gama's side when he smashed home the sixth in injury time at the end of the game.
