Bidvest Wits held on for a 1-0 win over Platinum Stars in an Absa Premiership clash at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday night.
Wits got a lucky break in the 20th minute when the hardworking Eleazer Rodgers chased down a loose ball and managed to round goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela, who brought him down.
Mzimela was the last man in defence and referee Victor Hlungwani quickly pointed to the spot and flashed a red card, despite new FIFA rules stating that a penalty and red card should not be awarded at the same time unless the foul is intentional.
The goalkeeper could have received a yellow card if the referee had deemed the foul to be unintentional, but as it was, with Mzimela pulling Rodgers back, he was sent for an early shower before 20 minutes were played.
Rodgers stepped up and converted the spot-kick himself, sending subsitute keeper Steven Hoffman the wrong way.
Cavin Johnson's side played a courageous game with 10 men for 70 minutes but did not have enough to find an equaliser, while Wits were ineffective playing on the counter-attack.
Wits are now two points clear of Cape Town City at the top of the table and have two games in hand.
