Late goals from Elias Pelembe and Glen Salmon ensured that SuperSport United would end Saturday evening top of the Absa Premiership as they beat Platinum Stars 2-0 at the Super Stadium.
SuperSport had the better of the opening exchanges, with Masibusane Zongo and Hlompo Kekana both having efforts on goal in the first ten minutes that failed to trouble Stars goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini.
In the 27th minute the Tycoons' Stanley Kgatla shot over the crossbar from close range after a Jabu Mahlangu corner kick that the Matsatsantsa defence failed to adequately clear.
Fikru Tefera and Godfrey Sapula both had speculative efforts for SuperSport and Stars respectively, while the visitors' Bradley Grobler had the last chance of the half, shooting wide from 12 yards out just before the break.
The teams continued to 'shadow box' in the early stages of the second half, but Pelembe should have broken the deadlock when he met Tsietsi Mahoa's cross in the 57th minute, but he only succeeded in hitting the post from six yards out.
On 62 minutes Joseph Mkalipa so nearly gave Stars the lead, but he was denied by a terrific save from United's Denis Onyango, who parried the ball around the post for a corner kick.
SuperSport continued to look dangerous in possession, though substitute Anthony Laffor could only find the safe hands of Kapini with a header in the 71st minute. Four minutes later, however, Kapini was helpless to stop Pelembe's finish from Laffor's cross, handing the hosts a 1-0 lead.
United had chances to extend their lead, but it wasn't until the 88th minute that Salmon got on the end of Pelembe's cross and headed home the hosts' second goal to effectively end the game as a contest.
